WHO AM I

Hi!

I’m Sarah Grunder. I’m from San Francisco, California and have lived in Barcelona, Spain for the past 7 years. I am an artist, a coach, and a program co-ordinator.

I have worked for many years with the ‘alternative crowd’ (creatives, skateboarders, etc.) by running residencies, programs, events, and exhibitions with artists from all over the world.

In 2020 I became a coach to provide even more professional and curated services + offer more resources for the creative.

MY VISION:

I believe in the importance of health for all creatives. Through the years, I’ve listened to hundreds of artists share their stories, their hearts, their struggles, and their dreams. We sit at coffee shops and bars, creatives from Spain, the USA, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, so many corners of the world.

And in hearing those stories and through witnessing and living my own creative journey, I have grown to believe fully in the importance of health for the creative, because of how powerful the role of the artist is in our society.

I have found coaching to bring long-lasting sustainable changes to my life, and to the lives of many others.

It is a resource that empowers you to “take the bull by the horns”, to take the reigns of your own life, and to crystallize your dreams.

We arrived at a goal that was exactly what I wanted, but before the session I didn’t know how to put it into words. I haven’t had the time. During the session I could see myself gaining back my fire, that feeling of ‘I can do anything that I put my mind to!’, and for years I havn’t had that energy in me. Now I have it again since I have these goals that are so clear!

  • *Andrew Simonet wrote this in 2020 as the world was reeling from so many different things. You can search online to see the full version, but I wanted to include this because I feel he expresses so well the role and call of the artist:

    “Dear artists,

    Your skills are sorely needed.

If you mostly hang out with artists, you might think your skills as an artist are normal. They are not. Few people have the range, depth of practice, and follow-through to discover and manifest new visions.

Artists navigate the unknown. We go in our studios and ask new questions, pushing away from shore and into uncertainty. In this time of roiling uncertainty, we know how to stay awake and responsive, and how to help others do the same.

Artists build possible futures. We are connectors, conveners, community builders.

We understand rhythm, flow, and negative space. Not everything we do right now needs to be doing. Silence is a way of telling. Stillness is movement.

We bear witness. We listen to and reveal what it is like to be alive right now.

We use what we have on hand to build what we need. We make sculptures from discarded materials, dances out of everyday gestures, music from found sounds. We know how to begin with what we have.

We build alternative economies based in collaboration, barter, D.I.Y. resourcefulness, and repurposing what others do not value.

We challenge assumptions and reframe the world. Artists look past the noise to deeper, more radical possibilities.

Wherever you are, I call on you to unleash your practice as an artist and maker and re-imaginer.

You don’t need to save the world. You need only carry your gifts and skills into this present challenge.

Make the art this moment needs. May we be completely safe with our health and bold as all hell in our practice.

This is what we train for.”
